Eco-Friendly Kids Crafts, DIY

Eco-friendly kids crafts:

Do you find yourself looking for activities for your kids to do at home? It's Spring, the perfect time to get outside, get active and get creative with your children. With that in mind, read on to learn more about some eco-friendly craft project ideas.

Create your own wind chime:

You can make your own gorgeous wind chime from just a few different sized tin cans. Gather your tins and help your child to decorate them using paint and glitter, lots of glitter. Then make a hole in the centre of each tin with a nail. Thread the string through the holes - tie a knot at the end of each piece of string and tie them together. This is a great activity to encourage your child's creativity to shine and add some music to your courtyard or patio.

Make recycled crayons:

Do you have some old, unused crayons lying around the house? We have the perfect idea for your child to make something out of these unwanted colour sticks. Help your child gather all the old crayons together and break them into smaller pieces. Get out a muffin tin and spray it with non-stick spray, put the crayon pieces into each of the muffin holes in the tray. Place it into your pre-heated oven (180 degrees) and bake for about seven minutes. Remove from oven and let them cool completely. Pop crayons out of the tray once cooled, and the crayons are ready to use. Try mixing crayon colours to make more interesting, funky colours.

Milk carton pencil holder:

Recycle your milk carton so that you and your child can create a stationery holder together. Draw a line around your carton at the desired height and cut along the line. Then assist your child in choosing and cutting out pictures that they wish to decorate it with. Use the glue to stick the pictures to bottom of the milk carton. There you have it - your new stationery holder. You can brush a layer of PVA glue over if you would like to, to protect the pictures.

Home-made finger paints:

This is a very easy way to make your own finger paint for your child, and they can help too. Take three tablespoons of sugar, half a teaspoon of salt, half a cup of corn starch, two cups of water. Mix all the ingredients into a saucepan and heat until the mixture thickens. Let it cool and pour into containers. You can add different colour food colouring to make the different hues and then the finger painting fun can begin!

Other eco-friendly projects to try:

· Tin can herb pots.

· Magazine holder out of a cereal box.

· Flower vase from recyclable bottles.

Party Decorations - Set An Atmosphere To Make Your Event Shine

Your choice of party decorations can be a direct factor in the atmosphere and mood of your holiday events. Whether you are celebrating Valentine's Day, a birthday, anniversary or major holiday, your event decor must visually represent the theme of the event to help maintain an almost subconscious "feel" of your theme. If your past parties have seemed to lack luster in spite of great refreshments and welcomed guests, you may just be lacking the party supplies that it takes to set the right mood. A few small and inexpensive enhancements can bring your events to life and make what seems like a meeting into a real celebration.

Themes - Most parties start with a theme like Valentine's Day, Christmas or "Happy Birthday". Of course you will want to choose your party decorations accordingly, but what about when your party doesn't have a specific theme? Create a theme! Something as simple as a color can help brighten the room (and the mood) much more effectively than typical white linen service. Consider adding brightly colored party decorations to create a "color scheme" for an un-themed event.

Table Cloths, Plates & Napkins - Choose the appropriately themed party supplies that correspond to your event. For Valentine's Day, a few red tablecloths with hearts or cupid print can do wonders for bringing a romantic vibe to any gathering. Take it step further with matching plates, cups and napkins, and your guests can carry the idea with them throughout the event.

Banners & Balloons - No matter what the theme of your party, helium filled balloons and custom designed (or factory stock) banners are a great way to create a full effect of festive celebration. Over-sized "Happy Birthday" or "Congratulations" banners are ideal party decorations for recognizing the guest of honor while covering empty wall space in an entertaining fashion. A couple of dozen balloons floating freely throughout the venue or weighed down as table toppers add additional decorative flair.

Party Favors - It's always a good idea to have some sort of party favors -- like gift bags or disposable "table cameras" -- but for a child's party, party favors are an absolute must. Keeping a good supply of kazoos, noise makers, pointy hats, mini-puzzles, coloring books and crayons handy at your child's event can help those fidgety little rascals from becoming bored and disgruntled.
